Newsletter 11/20

Programming note - next Thursday is Thanksgiving, so I’ll be sending out a shorter newsletter! Can’t believe it’s almost here—we’re travelling to Idaho to be with my parents (and talk a lot of hoops with my dad).

Buy/Sell Targets
This doesn’t constitute investment advice, more just a window into my overall strategy as well as for entertainment purposes. All pricing and screenshots are taken from Card Ladder—the only pricing & inventory tool I use.
✔️ Jalen Hurts 🏈 - The Eagles’ passing attack is kind of in shambles right now, but I see an opportunity to buy based on pricing history. If you look at the chart below, you’ll see that his pricing for about a year has bounced between $40 and $80 for his Prizm PSA 10 (other cards of his show similar pricing channels, like the Mosaic PSA 10 bouncing between $20 and $50). My move here would be to patiently wait until you can find a card around $40 - $45, and then see if you can sell it after a win or two in the playoffs at $75 - $80.

✔️ Donovan Mitchell 🏀 - If you’ve been reading me, you know he’s one of my favorite players in the league! His Cavs are under the radar because of a slow start, but they’re now 10-5 and have barely had Garland playing. Mitchell is averaging around 31 points per game. There’s a stink on the Cavs from an ugly playoff loss last year, but I’ll be shocked if they don’t make the Conference Finals this year. He’s one of the best playoff scorers of all time (7th highest PPG ever). Grab him now before people remember this is a great team.

❌ Josh Allen 🏈 - He’s up significantly over 12- and 24-month time frames, which makes sense as he balled out and won an MVP last year. I’m not quite sure why he’s at an all-time high right now, as his team looks more vulnerable than last year, and Allen is unlikely to win the MVP (he’s a distant 3rd in odds behind Stafford and Maye). In football, I never like to invest in a player who needs to win the Super Bowl to see significant short-term gains. With a moderately tough remaining schedule, I’d sell now. If you’re more of a gambler, wait to see if they can win a round or two in the playoffs before offloading.

❌ Joel Embiid 🏀 - I’m not sure why anyone is holding out hope for him. He can still put up some stats, but the injuries aren’t going away. Plus, if you watch him, he can barely move to play defense and grab rebounds. To me, he’s a fire sale, especially since many of his cards have held steady the past year. I thought they’d have been dropping all along. At some point, most in the hobby will realize he’s a sunk cost, so I’d offload him before then. Also, imagine owning the team and realizing you owe him $69 million in 2028-29!

Guess the player putting up these stats this season: 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. |

New Releases
There are a few releases this week, but nothing of much note - National Treasures Collegiate Football and Rookies & Stars Football.
On a bigger note, pre-orders are now open for Topps Chrome Basketball!
*Release dates can (and often do) change as products get delayed 🙄. It’s possible some notable sets are being released this week that I covered in previous editions.
